Chapter 3
The Creation of the Angels
Opening Verse
“All praise is for Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, who made the angels messengers with wings—two, three, or four. He increases in creation whatever He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things Competent.”
— Qur’an 35:1
The Story
Before the creation of Adam, Allah had already created the angels.
The angels are among the unseen creations of Allah. Human beings cannot see them in their true form unless Allah wills otherwise.
The Qur’an describes them as honored servants.
They do not claim any share of Allah’s divinity, nor do they possess any attribute that belongs only to Him.
Instead, they worship Him with complete humility and perfect obedience.
Allah says that they do not disobey Him in what He commands them, and they carry out whatever they are ordered to do.
They glorify Him day and night without becoming weary.
The angels have different responsibilities, all assigned by Allah.
Some deliver His revelation to the prophets.
Some record the deeds of human beings.
Some guard people by Allah’s command.
Others carry out tasks that Allah has entrusted to them throughout His creation.
The greatest honor of the angels is not their power or their number.
It is their complete submission to their Lord.
Among the angels, Jibril (Gabriel) holds a special position.
Allah entrusted him with conveying revelation to His messengers.
Through Jibril, the words of Allah reached prophets from Adam until the final revelation given to Muhammad ﷺ.
The existence of the angels reminds believers that Allah’s creation extends far beyond what human eyes can perceive.
The unseen world is real, even if it lies beyond human observation.
Faith is built not only upon what we see, but also upon what Allah has truthfully informed us.
Historical Insight
Belief in the angels is one of the foundations of Islamic faith.
The Qur’an mentions many of their roles but does not attempt to describe every detail of their existence.
Muslims therefore affirm what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have authentically taught, while avoiding speculation about matters of the unseen.
This careful approach preserves both humility and faith.
Reflection
The angels teach us the beauty of sincere obedience.
They never compete with one another for honor.
They never question Allah’s wisdom with arrogance.
They fulfill every command entrusted to them.
Their example reminds believers that true honor is found in obedience to Allah, not in status, power, or recognition.
Looking Ahead
Among Allah’s unseen creation was another race, created before mankind for a different purpose.
They possessed the ability to choose between obedience and disobedience.
The next chapter introduces the creation of the jinn and the beginning of one of the greatest tests in human history.
