Chapter 6

Adam and His Wife in Paradise Opening Verse “And We said, ‘O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise, and eat freely from wherever you wish. But do not approach this tree, or you will be among the wrongdoers.’” — Qur’an 2:35 The Story After creating Adam, Allah did not leave him alone. Allah created for him a wife so that they might live together in tranquility and companionship. Allah granted them a place in Paradise, where they enjoyed its blessings and were free to eat from its abundant provision. Only one command was given: They were not to approach a particular tree. The Qur’an does not identify the type of tree, and neither should we claim to know what Allah did not reveal. The purpose of the command was not the tree itself, but obedience to Allah. Among the unseen creation was Iblis, who had already refused Allah’s command out of pride. Although expelled because of his rebellion, he sought to mislead Adam and his wife. He whispered to them, presenting disobed...

Adam: The First Human Opening Verse “When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I am going to place upon the earth a successive authority (khalifah).’” — Qur’an 2:30 The Story After creating the heavens and the earth, and after creating the angels and the jinn, Allah decreed the creation of the first human being. Allah informed the angels of His divine will: “Indeed, I am going to place upon the earth a khalifah.” The angels responded with a question—not out of objection, but seeking understanding of Allah’s wisdom: “Will You place upon it one who will spread corruption and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?” Allah answered with words that remain among the greatest lessons in the Qur’an: “Indeed, I know that which you do not know.” Allah then created Adam from clay, as mentioned in several passages of the Qur’an. His creation was unlike that of any other human being, for Adam had neither father nor mother. His creation was a unique act of Alla...

The Creation of the Jinn Opening Verse “And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.” — Qur’an 15:27 The Story Before the creation of human beings, Allah created another creation known as the jinn. The jinn are among the unseen beings that Allah created. Like human beings, they are responsible for worshipping Allah and following His guidance. Allah says: “I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.” — Qur’an 51:56 This verse establishes an important truth: the purpose of creation is not limited to human beings alone. All accountable creation exists to recognize and worship Allah. The Qur’an informs us that the jinn were created from fire. However, their exact nature and the full reality of their existence belong to the unseen, which only Allah fully knows. Like humans, the jinn have the ability to choose. Among them are those who believe and obey Allah, and among them are those who reject the truth. The Qur’an tells us that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ r...

The Creation of the Angels Opening Verse “All praise is for Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, who made the angels messengers with wings—two, three, or four. He increases in creation whatever He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things Competent.” — Qur’an 35:1 The Story Before the creation of Adam, Allah had already created the angels. The angels are among the unseen creations of Allah. Human beings cannot see them in their true form unless Allah wills otherwise. The Qur’an describes them as honored servants. They do not claim any share of Allah’s divinity, nor do they possess any attribute that belongs only to Him. Instead, they worship Him with complete humility and perfect obedience. Allah says that they do not disobey Him in what He commands them, and they carry out whatever they are ordered to do. They glorify Him day and night without becoming weary. The angels have different responsibilities, all assigned by Allah. Some deliver His revelation...
