Chapter 4

The Creation of the Jinn

Opening Verse

“And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.”
Qur’an 15:27

The Story

Before the creation of human beings, Allah created another creation known as the jinn.

The jinn are among the unseen beings that Allah created. Like human beings, they are responsible for worshipping Allah and following His guidance.

Allah says:

“I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.”
Qur’an 51:56

This verse establishes an important truth: the purpose of creation is not limited to human beings alone. All accountable creation exists to recognize and worship Allah.

The Qur’an informs us that the jinn were created from fire. However, their exact nature and the full reality of their existence belong to the unseen, which only Allah fully knows.

Like humans, the jinn have the ability to choose. Among them are those who believe and obey Allah, and among them are those who reject the truth.

The Qur’an tells us that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited the Qur’an, a group of jinn listened to it and recognized its guidance. They returned to their people and called them toward faith.

This shows that the message of Islam was not only for mankind, but for all accountable beings.

Iblis and the Test of Obedience

Among the stories connected to the jinn is the story of Iblis.

The Qur’an tells us that Iblis was from the jinn.

When Allah created Adam and commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam as an act of obedience to Allah’s command, Iblis refused.

His refusal was not caused by a lack of knowledge. He knew of Allah, but pride entered his heart.

He said:

“I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
Qur’an 7:12

This was the beginning of arrogance and disobedience.

Iblis valued his own opinion above Allah’s command. He believed that his origin made him superior, forgetting that honor comes only through obedience to Allah.

Because of his rebellion, Iblis became an enemy of humanity. He was given respite until the appointed time and declared that he would attempt to mislead the children of Adam.

However, Allah made clear that sincere servants would not be overcome by him.

Historical Insight

The story of Iblis teaches one of the earliest lessons in human history:

Knowledge alone does not save a person if it is accompanied by arrogance.

Iblis knew Allah, but pride prevented him from obeying Him.

Islam teaches that true success requires both knowledge and humility.

The unseen world is not presented in revelation to satisfy curiosity, but to teach humanity lessons about faith, responsibility, and obedience.

Reflection

The greatest danger to faith is not always ignorance.

Sometimes it is pride.

A person may know the truth yet reject it because accepting it requires humility.

The story of Iblis reminds believers that the heart must remain humble before Allah.

True honor is not found in what a person was created from, what they possess, or how others view them.

True honor comes from obedience to Allah.

Looking Ahead

After the creation of the heavens, the earth, the angels, and the jinn, Allah created the first human being:

Adam.

His creation would mark the beginning of mankind’s journey on earth.
