Chapter 5
Adam: The First Human
Opening Verse
“When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I am going to place upon the earth a successive authority (khalifah).’”
— Qur’an 2:30
The Story
After creating the heavens and the earth, and after creating the angels and the jinn, Allah decreed the creation of the first human being.
Allah informed the angels of His divine will:
“Indeed, I am going to place upon the earth a khalifah.”
The angels responded with a question—not out of objection, but seeking understanding of Allah’s wisdom:
“Will You place upon it one who will spread corruption and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?”
Allah answered with words that remain among the greatest lessons in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, I know that which you do not know.”
Allah then created Adam from clay, as mentioned in several passages of the Qur’an. His creation was unlike that of any other human being, for Adam had neither father nor mother. His creation was a unique act of Allah’s power and wisdom.
When Allah fashioned Adam and breathed into him from the soul that He created for him, Adam became the first human being and the first prophet in the history of mankind.
Allah honored Adam with knowledge that had not been granted to the angels. He taught him the names of things, demonstrating that knowledge is one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon humanity.
Allah then presented these things to the angels and asked them to name them, if they were able.
The angels replied with humility:
“Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”
Then Allah commanded Adam to inform them of the names, and Adam did so by the knowledge Allah had given him.
Through this event, Allah demonstrated that honor is not based on origin, appearance, or physical strength. Rather, true honor is granted by Allah through faith, knowledge, and obedience.
Historical Insight
The creation of Adam marks the beginning of human history according to the Qur’an.
Islam teaches that all human beings descend from one father and one mother. Therefore, differences of race, language, and nationality are signs of Allah’s wisdom, not grounds for superiority.
The Qur’an teaches that the noblest people are those who are most mindful of Allah.
Reflection
The story of Adam begins not with conflict, but with honor.
Human beings were created with responsibility.
They were given intellect, knowledge, and the freedom to choose between obedience and disobedience.
Every generation inherits that trust.
The value of a person is not measured by wealth, power, lineage, or appearance, but by faith and righteousness.
Looking Ahead
Adam’s creation was complete, but he was alone.
In His mercy, Allah created for him a spouse.
The next chapter tells the story of Hawwa (Eve), life in Paradise, and the beginning of humanity’s first test.
