Chapter 7

The Descent to Earth

Opening Verse

“We said, ‘Go down, all of you, as enemies to one another. On the earth you will have a dwelling place and provision for a time.’”
— Qur’an 2:36

The Story

After accepting Adam’s repentance, Allah decreed that Adam, his wife, and Iblis would descend from Paradise.

This descent was not beyond Allah’s knowledge or wisdom. It was part of His eternal plan, for He had already declared that He would place a khalifah upon the earth.

The earth would become the home of humanity.

It would be a place of worship, responsibility, trials, and mercy.

Human life on earth was never meant to be permanent.

It was the beginning of a journey that would end with resurrection, judgment, and the everlasting life to come.

Before Adam and his wife began their life on earth, Allah addressed them with guidance.

He made it clear that guidance would continue to come from Him.

Whenever His guidance reached mankind, those who followed it would have no reason to fear the future or grieve over the past.

Those who rejected His signs and persisted in disbelief would be accountable before Him.

From the very beginning of human history, Allah did not leave mankind without direction.

He promised guidance through His chosen messengers, calling people to worship Him alone and to live according to His commands.

Thus, the history of humanity is not merely the story of civilizations, kingdoms, or nations.

It is the story of divine guidance and humanity’s response to it.

Every generation would face the same choice:

To follow the guidance of Allah…

Or to turn away from it.

Historical Insight

The Qur’an presents humanity’s descent to earth as the beginning of mankind’s earthly mission, not as a curse without hope.

Although life on earth includes hardship, it is also the place where people can believe, repent, perform righteous deeds, and seek Allah’s mercy.

The promise of guidance begins with Adam and continues through every prophet whom Allah sent to mankind.

This unbroken chain of revelation reaches its completion with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the revelation of the Qur’an.

Reflection

Life on earth is not an accident.

Nor is it humanity’s final destination.

Every blessing…

Every hardship…

Every success…

Every loss…

Forms part of the test through which Allah distinguishes sincerity from falsehood, gratitude from ingratitude, and obedience from rebellion.

The believer lives with hope because Allah never left humanity without guidance.

His revelation remains the light by which hearts find their way.

Looking Ahead

On earth, Adam began a new chapter of human history.

He lived as both the first man and the first prophet, teaching his family to worship Allah alone.

From his children would emerge the first generation of mankind—and among them would arise the first conflict between truth and falsehood.

The next chapter tells the story of the two sons of Adam, a lesson about faith, envy, justice, and the sanctity of human life.

• It does not specify where Adam descended on earth, because no authentic text establishes a location.
• It does not mention reports about Adam and his wife descending in different places or searching for one another, as these reports are not established by authentic evidence.
• It emphasizes the Qur’anic message: earthly life is a test guided by revelation, which is the central lesson presented in the Qur’an and consistent with the methodology of Ibn Kathir.

This chapter also serves as a bridge from the story of Adam to the beginning of human society, where the narrative of The Beginning and the End moves to the first generation of mankind.
