Chapter 2

The Creation of the Heavens and the Earth

Opening Verse

“Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, chasing it rapidly; and He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, all subject to His command. Surely, creation and command belong to Him. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.”
Qur’an 7:54

The Story

The universe did not come into existence by chance.

It was created by Allah, the Lord of all that exists.

Again and again, the Qur’an directs mankind to reflect upon the heavens above and the earth beneath their feet. Their harmony, order, and purpose point to the wisdom and power of their Creator.

Allah tells us that He created the heavens and the earth in six days.

The Qur’an affirms this fact in several places, while also making it clear that Allah is never overcome by fatigue or weakness.

Unlike His creation, Allah is perfect in His power. His command is absolute. When He wills a thing, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.

The heavens, the earth, the mountains, the seas, the rivers, the stars, and every created thing exist only because Allah brought them into existence.

Nothing shares with Him in creation.

Nothing shares with Him in sovereignty.

Nothing resembles Him.

The Qur’an repeatedly calls people to observe the world around them.

The alternation of night and day…

The movement of the sun and the moon…

The rain that brings dead land back to life…

The diversity of plants, animals, and human beings…

These are not ordinary events.

They are signs (ayat) pointing to the Creator.

Every generation is invited to reflect upon these signs with humility and gratitude.

The purpose of creation is not merely to admire its beauty.

Its greater purpose is to recognize the One who created it and to worship Him alone.

Throughout history, many people admired creation while forgetting the Creator.

The Qur’an continually redirects human attention to this essential truth.

Creation itself is one of the greatest witnesses to the Oneness of Allah.

Historical Insight

The Qur’an does not present the creation of the universe as mythology or legend.

It presents it as a reality established by Allah’s revelation.

At the same time, the Qur’an does not describe every detail of how creation unfolded. It teaches what guides humanity to faith and leaves matters of the unseen to Allah’s perfect knowledge unless He has revealed them.

For this reason, Muslims affirm what Allah has revealed and refrain from speculation where revelation is silent.

Reflection

Every sunrise…

Every star in the night sky…

Every drop of rain…

Every living creature…

Each is a reminder that creation has a Creator.

The Qur’an invites people not only to observe the universe but also to ask the most important question:

Who brought all of this into existence?

Its answer is the foundation of faith:

Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

Looking Ahead

Before the creation of humanity, Allah also created beings who would worship Him without disobedience.

The next chapter introduces these noble servants:

The angels.
